## Know what you are asking for before services are mapped

Underground service locating and mapping helps a Gold Coast project understand where buried services such as water, sewer, stormwater, gas, electricity and telecommunications may run. The information can support design, excavation planning or a wider site survey. The useful first question is what kind of information you actually need, because locating can mean quite different things, and not every option will suit or be available for every site.

Some briefs only need existing records plotted on a site plan. Others need services searched for in the field. Some need services that have already been exposed by others, for example in a trench, measured and mapped. Each gives a different level of confidence. Which of these can be provided for your site, and in what output, is confirmed when the job is scoped, and the quote should say which one is included.

## Three types of information

These are general types of service information, not a fixed package, and they are not interchangeable. Which ones can be provided for your site, alone or together, is confirmed before the job is booked.

If you also need buildings, trees, kerbs and visible pits on the same plan, a [detail survey](/detail-survey/) can be combined with the locating scope.

## Why records are not enough on their own

Utility plans indicate that infrastructure is present, not exactly where it is. Before You Dig Australia makes this point in its [guide to free plans](https://www.byda.com.au/before-you-dig/guide-to-free-plans/), and it is a good reason not to treat a plotted line as a measured position. Services can be missing from records, moved during later works, or drawn in an approximate location.

Private services, such as connections between buildings on the same lot, often do not appear on public records at all.

Once the design accounts for existing services, a [construction set-out survey](/construction-set-out-survey/) marks the new work on site from the approved plans.

## What to include in your brief

Describe the area on a plan or marked-up image, the services of interest, the reason for the investigation and who will use the result. If a client, designer or contract specifies a particular standard, quality level or deliverable, include it so the scope can be confirmed against that requirement before work is booked.

Share any utility plans you already hold, previous surveys and site access details. Note hardstand, traffic or restricted areas that could affect what can be investigated.

For new services that have just been installed, an [as-constructed survey](/as-constructed-survey-gold-coast/) records their finished positions for the asset owner.

## How locating fits with other surveys

Locating results are often combined with a site survey so the services appear alongside buildings, boundaries and levels. A [detail survey](/detail-survey/) records the visible pits, covers and features at the surface, which helps connect the underground information to what can be seen.

## Limitations to understand

No locating approach can promise that every service has been found, that depths are exact, or that ground is clear to dig. The output describes what was found and how, within the agreed scope. Decisions about excavation remain with the people doing and supervising the work, using this information alongside their own procedures.

## Request a scoped locating quote

Send a plan or image of the area, the services you need to know about, why you need them and who will use the result. The quote can then state which type of locating or mapping is included and what the output will be.

**Will every underground service be found?**

No method can guarantee that. Results depend on the services, ground conditions, records and the agreed scope. The output should make clear what was found and the limits that apply.

**Are depths included?**

Only if the scope includes them and the information supports it. Depths from field locating can be uncertain; measured depths are most dependable where a service has been exposed.

**What will I receive?**

The output is agreed for the job. It may be marks on site, a plan showing services against site features, or both. Confirm what your designer or contractor needs before booking.

**Can locating be combined with a detail survey?**

Yes, they can be scoped together. The detail survey records surface features and the locating scope covers the underground information. Agreeing both at once helps avoid gaps between the two.
