## Measuring how much material is there

A volume survey measures the shape of a stockpile, excavation or earthworks area and calculates the volume between two surfaces. One surface is the material as surveyed; the other is a base or reference surface agreed for the job. The difference between them is the volume, usually reported in cubic metres.

Volumes are often needed for stockpiles, bulk excavation, imported fill or progress checks on Gold Coast building and civil sites. The figure is only as useful as the agreement behind it, so the purpose, base surface and extent need to be settled before anyone measures.

## The base surface decides the answer

For a stockpile sitting on the ground, the hidden question is what lies underneath it. If the ground was surveyed before the material arrived, that earlier surface can be used as the base. If not, there is no measured record of the ground beneath. Any base used then rests on an assumption, and whether a particular assumption is reasonable depends on the evidence on site and a professional assessment. That assumption should be agreed with the people relying on the volume, and the result treated as less certain.

For cut and fill, the comparison is often between an earlier surface, such as a pre-start survey, and the current or design surface. Agree which surfaces are being compared and who supplied them before relying on the result. Where no earlier levels exist yet, capturing them with a [contour survey](/contour-survey/) before work starts gives a baseline for later comparison.

Before earthworks start, a [contour survey](/contour-survey/) records the existing levels that later volumes can be compared against.

## What a volume figure does not tell you

A survey measures geometric volume. It does not measure density, moisture, compaction, bulking or the quality of the material, so it cannot by itself give tonnes or confirm whether fill meets a specification. Converting volume to weight needs a factor agreed by the people using the figure, and material testing is a separate service.

If a volume will support a payment claim, contract variation or dispute, agree the method and surfaces with the other party beforehand. A survey can measure the agreed extent; it cannot settle a commercial disagreement about what should have been measured.

When the excavation or fill is ready to build on, a [construction set-out survey](/construction-set-out-survey/) marks the design positions and levels for the next stage.

## Scoping the job

These details shape the quote and the usefulness of the result.

Once civil works are installed, an [as-constructed survey](/as-constructed-survey-gold-coast/) records the finished assets for the authority or owner receiving them.

## One-off or repeated measurement

Some jobs need a single figure. Others need the same area measured at intervals to track progress. Repeat surveys are only comparable if each one uses consistent extents and reference surfaces, so set that up at the start if the brief requires it. The capture approach and reporting format are confirmed for the site rather than assumed.

Tell us what needs measuring, why, and what reference surface or earlier survey exists. Include a site plan or marked-up photo of the stockpiles or areas. The quote is then based on the extent, access and number of measurements needed.

**Can the survey tell me how many tonnes are in the stockpile?**

Not directly. The survey measures volume. Converting to tonnes needs a density or conversion factor agreed by the parties, and that factor sits outside the survey.

**What if no one surveyed the ground before the stockpile was placed?**

Then there is no measured base to compare against. Whether a base can reasonably be assumed depends on what the site shows and a professional assessment. Any assumption should be agreed before the volume is used for anything important, and the result will be less certain than one with a measured base.

**Is the survey done by drone?**

The capture method depends on the site, the size of the area and the purpose. It is agreed for each job rather than assumed.

**Can the result be used for a progress claim?**

It can be one input if both parties agree on the surfaces and extent being measured. The survey does not approve or certify the claim.
